On the roads of Taiwan, there is a small car with visibility perhaps not surpassing that of the Old Defender; however, it continues to captivate a group of passionate enthusiasts. Especially with its three-door manual transmission model, featuring a detachable rear roof and roll cage, it remains unmatched by any modern SUV – this is the Freelander, once the sensation throughout Europe.
Introduced in 1997, the Freelander’s distinctive exterior design is playfully dubbed the “Hippo.” The headlight shapes resemble the nostrils of a hippopotamus, the side mirrors mimic its ears, and the front bumper design evokes the image of a hippo in water – all elements that endeared it to the hearts of young Europeans.
Photographers and friends embarked on an adventurous journey, driving the Freelander to Wulaokeng and the coastal erosion caves. As night fell, they lit a campfire inside the caves, initiating a special camping experience. In the midst of a night filled with intoxicating spirits, they unexpectedly witnessed the ascent of a red moon, resembling the salted egg yolk of a Mid-Autumn Festival mooncake , infusing the entire night with poetic beauty.
Come morning, they welcomed the sunrise on the horizon, with the summer sea breeze gradually intensifying as the sun ascended. This adventurous journey not only tested their driving skills but also presented challenges posed by the summer coastal erosion caves. The Freelander, like a unique companion in adventure, exuded captivating charm at every unknown turn.
